What to Know About When Planning a Move

Moving is known for being a hardship that can tax your mental and physical well-being. But, it doesn’t always have to be that way. With a little planning, you can execute a seamless move that leaves you with enough time and energy to get excited about where you’ll be living. Now that you know a move is imminent, you can take these steps to turn it into an experience that you enjoy.

Create a Packing Kit for Each Person

Needing to stop packing to search for scissors or tape is frustrating and can rob you of valuable time during your move. If you have multiple people helping to pack, then make sure they each have their own supplies. Even if you pack alone, leaving essential supplies in each room can prevent you from having to track down boxes and other supplies.

Give Every Box a Detailed Label

Most people will label boxes with which room they go into. While this is important, you may also want to take an extra step and write down a few details about what’s inside each one. Once you get to your new home, you’ll know instantly where you want to begin unpacking. Using colored tape for each room is another easy way to make sure your professional movers know where to put each box as they unload the truck.

Highlight Essential Boxes

If you have a large household, then it is reasonable to expect that you won’t have time to unpack everything on your moving day. To make sure you have what you need to eat and go to sleep, make sure to pack a few boxes that contain your essential items. You’ll want to make an essential box or bag for each kid and pet, too. These can contain bedding, personal hygiene supplies and even a special toy to help them feel comfortable in their new home.

Plan for Child and Pet Care

The moving process is hectic, and there will be times when doors need to be left open for the movers to carry boxes in and out of the house. Making sure to appoint someone to watch your children and pets leaves you free to communicate with the movers while also keeping everyone safe. If you need to keep your pets or children with you, then consider designating a special room to stay in that keeps them out of the way of people moving heavy furniture and appliances.

Know Your Limits

The initial excitement you feel about moving can cause you to try to take on more than is reasonably possible for most people. Try to get a realistic view of how long it will take you to pack or whether or not you can help move heavy items. If you know that a moving task is beyond your abilities or time constraints, then outsource them to a professional mover. Moving companies have the equipment and experience they need to help you move without putting strain on your mind and body.
