Charlie McCoy is a Master Barber whose entrepreneurial mindset has results in him establishing two successful businesses in New York City. Both of his businesses are barbershops and salons, and have become the go-to place for a haircut for a growing clientele.
Artisan Barber, a unisex luxury salon in the Upper East Side and Orchard & Ludlow in the Lower East Side have continued to become increasingly popular, and it’s not hard to see why. As a Master Barber who has spent years working for L’Oreal’s Kiehl’s Since 1851 before venturing out on his own, he was able to hit the ground running by taking his most loyal clients with him.
What Charlie was able to do is establish a community around his businesses. He did this with the help of local artists living in the area where his barbershops were located. Today, his salon Orchard & Ludlow doubles as an art gallery that showcases some extraordinary art, such as that by NY native artist Mark West.
As many businesses are struggling due to COVID-19, Charlie has seen the opposite. His businesses are thriving, and he’s been able to keep the momentum going. In fact, this year, he has launched three new brands outside of the haircare industry entirely.
With Orchard & Ludlow McCoy wanted to expand his clientele and truly embody how diverse the city is through his business. Orchard & Ludlow is a unisex salon that caters to the needs and wants of all groups of people; it’s a place where everyone can feel comfortable, regardless of their background and still expect quality service.
The brand launch of Orchard & Ludlow was aided with the help of model and former America’s Next Top Model contestant, Keenyah Hill in an effort to demonstrate how the salon now services both men and women. As a unisex salon, Orchard & Ludlow has its own product line with products that are guaranteed to work with any hair type from fine to curly. This was something McCoy kept in mind throughout the process given his own difficulties finding the right hair products for his younger daughter. The key ingredient in Orchard & Ludlow’s product line is argan oil and can be found in its Smooth + Hydrate Hair Serum as well as its Volume + Condition Mousse and along with Artisan Barber’s best selling grooming cream more. When clients enter the salon they’ll find the products at the front as well as a vibe like no other. Orchard & Ludlow and is a true gem of the community, featuring art from local artists as well as the talents of its barbers and stylists.
His two brick-and-mortar businesses have not only survived the pandemic-related economic fallout, but they have been thriving. The product lines of these businesses include cruelty-free products. Also, these barbershops and salons cater to their clients’ needs and wants in a way that provides a truly unique experience.
Looking forward, Charlie wants to expand beyond NYC. He’s already managed to expand into e-commerce, but eventually plans to have salons and barbershops across the US wholesale all his brands products. Charlie wants others to know that anything is possible, as long as you apply yourself and recognize the immense opportunities that exist for you.
