What Makes a Facelift Look Natural? Inside Dr. Jason Champagne’s Approach

A sharper jawline might be on the wish list. So might a smoother neck or less heaviness around the lower face. But for someone considering a facelift, the most important concern can be harder to put into words: wanting to look better without losing what makes their face their own.

It is a useful place to begin a conversation about facial rejuvenation. Before discussing techniques or recovery schedules, there is a more personal question to answer. What does the patient want to change, and what do they want to preserve?

At his Beverly Hills practice, Dr. Jason Champagne, a double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, approaches facelift surgery through that individual lens. His treatment plans account for facial anatomy, the way someone has aged, and the result they hope to achieve.

That requires looking beyond a single wrinkle or an isolated area of loose skin. The cheeks, jawline, and neck contribute to an overall impression. Improving one area means considering how it relates to everything around it.

Looking beyond the skin

The word facelift can make the operation sound simpler than it is. Facial aging involves more than skin becoming loose. Changes in the position and volume of underlying tissues also affect facial contours.

A jawline that once appeared clearly defined may become softer. Tissue can descend through the lower face, creating jowls. The neck may develop laxity that changes the profile.

Surgical planning begins with identifying which of those changes are present. Two people of the same age may have different concerns and need different approaches. One may have relatively limited changes around the jawline. Another may have more substantial tissue descent involving the cheeks, lower face, and neck.

Dr. Champagne’s approach emphasizes tailoring the procedure to those differences. The goal is to improve contours while maintaining balance across the face.

Restraint has a place in that process. Additional tightening or volume does not automatically produce a more convincing result. Decisions about how much to reposition, where to restore volume, and whether to address another area all contribute to the final appearance.

Where the deep plane facelift fits

Deep plane facelift surgery is among the techniques Dr. Champagne offers. It addresses deeper facial tissues beneath the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, commonly called the SMAS.

By releasing selected retaining ligaments, the surgeon can mobilize and reposition tissue, allowing the skin and underlying structures to move together in the treated areas. This approach can reduce reliance on tension at the skin surface.

For a patient researching the procedure, however, understanding the name is only the beginning. The more useful question is why that approach is being recommended for their particular face.

A technique cannot, by itself, guarantee a natural result. The patient’s anatomy, the surgical plan, the execution of that plan, and healing all influence the outcome.

A consultation should make those connections clear. Someone should leave understanding which concerns surgery is intended to improve, what changes are realistic, and which concerns may require a different treatment.

Considering the face as a whole

A patient may arrive focused on jowls and discover that the neck is an equally important part of the discussion. Someone else may be concerned about their lower face while also noticing heaviness around the eyes.

Those concerns can coexist, but they are not necessarily addressed by the same operation.

A facelift does not treat every aspect of facial aging. Upper eyelid skin, brow position, changes in skin texture, and loss of facial volume each require their own assessment. Some patients may benefit from a combination of procedures. Others may be best served by a more limited plan.

Dr. Champagne’s Champagne Full Facial Rejuvenation® approach considers these relationships. Depending on the individual, treatment may incorporate facelift surgery, a neck lift, eyelid surgery, a brow lift, or facial fat grafting.

The value of a comprehensive assessment is that each recommendation has a purpose. It also gives patients an opportunity to establish priorities, discuss the demands of recovery, and understand whether procedures should be combined or considered separately.

The conversation before surgery

For someone deciding whether to have a facelift, a consultation needs to cover more than the anticipated improvement.

Medical history, medications, previous surgery, prior cosmetic treatments, and factors that may affect healing belong in the discussion. So do expectations. A photograph can help explain a concern, but the plan must reflect the anatomy of the person being treated.

Older photographs of the patient can provide useful context. They may show facial characteristics the patient values or help illustrate changes that are difficult to describe. The conversation can then focus on specific features rather than a general wish to look younger.

There is also no single birthday that determines when surgery becomes appropriate. The degree of facial change, overall health, realistic expectations, and willingness to undertake recovery matter more than age alone.

For some people, that assessment may support a surgical plan. For others, it may clarify that surgery is premature or that a different option better fits their concerns.

What photographs cannot show

Before and after images are an important part of researching a surgeon, but they represent only part of the experience.

Facelift recovery can involve bruising, swelling, tightness, and temporary changes in sensation. Patients need clear instructions about incision care, medication, activity, and follow-up visits. Plans for work, exercise, travel, and important events should account for individual healing and the extent of surgery.

The risks also deserve a direct conversation. These include bleeding, infection, unfavorable scarring, poor wound healing, anesthesia complications, and nerve injury. Understanding those possibilities is part of making an informed decision.

Even after the initial recovery, the appearance continues to settle. A facelift also does not stop the aging process. The result exists within a face that will continue to change over time.

Those realities give context to the photographs. They help patients evaluate the entire commitment involved in surgery.

For Dr. Champagne, individualized planning is central to facial rejuvenation. It places the emphasis on understanding the person’s features and selecting an approach that fits their needs.

For the patient, that can make the starting question more specific. Which changes would help them feel more comfortable with their appearance? Which features are essential to preserve? And what are they prepared to undertake to achieve that improvement?

A thoughtful facelift consultation makes room for all three.
